Transport Planning Consultant

Consultant Position Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

ABOUT THE POSITION

Based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Transport Planning Consultant will play a key role in the conceptualization, design and implementation of sustainable transport solutions. The Consultant’s primary responsibility will be developing and implementing a strategy to improve the non-motorized transport (NMT) environment in Ethiopian cities, and may also include projects related to BRT, parking management and urban development policy. 

The job will entail a significant amount of fieldwork, including site visits and field surveys. The candidate must have an excellent command of written and spoken English and Amharic. The Consultant will analyze primary and secondary transport data, prepare conceptual designs and monitor project implementation. The Consultant will work closely with governments, consultants, and partner organizations. The Consultant will be based in Addis Ababa. S/he will work closely with head office staff, international experts, United Nations entities and partner organizations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with governments, public transport authorities, and other bodies to collect, process and analyze transport data. 
  • Plan and design non-motorized transport facilities. 
  • Prepare feasibility reports for transport systems. 
  • Gather information on international best practices in transport system design and apply lessons learned in locally. 
  • Support ITDP director in maintaining working relationships with national and local government officials, private sector counterparts and NGO partners. 
  • Represent ITDP in meetings with civil society and government partners. 
  • Work with the Communications Team to create communications materials that facilitate implementation of ITDP initiatives.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A master’s degree in transportation planning, transportation engineering, city planning or other relevant field. 
  • 2-3 years of relevant professional experience. 
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills in English and Amharic. 
  • Familiarity with transport planning including survey design and management; demand analysis; and network planning. Knowledge of transport modelling preferred. 
  • Excellent Excel, Access, CAD, and GIS software skills required. 
  • Familiarity with the Adobe suite preferred.

Public Transit Manager

Full Time Position Boston, USA

ITDP has been working in Boston since 2012 with the goal of getting the first Gold-Standard Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor in the United States opened in Boston. ITDP plans to build on previous work in BRT planning and shift to a corridor-level implementation focus, leveraging recent political leadership in the City of Everett. It will continue to build support for a network of BRT corridors in greater Boston across municipalities. These efforts will raise the visibility of the City of Boston’s plans for BRT and begin to place the region back in the pantheon of places with great transit systems.

The Public Transit Manager is based in Boston, Massachusetts and will play a key role in overseeing the conceptualization, design and implementation of sustainable transport solutions. The primary work area will be technical project management in greater Boston, specifically developing a BRT Roadmap planning document that considers infrastructure, operational, financial and communications components. The Manager must have a strong command of BRT service and infrastructure planning as well as a willingness to learn the latest international best practices for implementation in greater Boston.

Additional work areas will include street design, parking management, and urban development policy related to BRT corridor development. The job will entail fieldwork, including site visits, and supervision of surveys and consultants. The Manager will analyze primary and secondary transport data, oversee conceptual designs and monitor project implementation. The work requires close partnerships with public agencies, consultants and advocacy organizations.

The Public Transit Manager will report to the U.S. Director and will be expected to work flexibly and creatively with the U.S. team, municipal partners and consultants.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Manage all technical components of ITDP’s work in greater Boston, especially related to developing and overseeing the BRT Roadmap. 
  • Manage consultants and high-level quality assurance of technical deliverables. 
  • Provide support for additional technical work programs, as needed. 
  • Contribute to the internal ITDP public transit community of practice, and educate the ITDP U.S. team on technical best practices. 
  • Conduct transit research and develop reports that are easily translatable to a lay audience; develop memos that distill technical content from ITDP team members across global offices. 
  • Represent ITDP with multiple municipalities in the greater Boston area where data, long-term plans and infrastructure plans are being reviewed; provide information on best practice in BRT planning. 
  • Work on bus service issues including network redesign and integrating transit within low emission zones. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5-7 years of U.S. bus or BRT experience. 
  • Master’s degree in transportation engineering, transport planning, urban planning or a related field. 
  • Advanced knowledge of U.S. transit policy and planning issues and bus rapid transit issues.

Communications Coordinator

Full Time Position Nairobi, Kenya

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Communications Coordinator is a new position within the ITDP Africa team, based in Nairobi. This position is responsible for strategy and management of communications at ITDP Africa. This includes local media outreach, managing ITDP Africa’s website and social media, and working with the Africa Program Director and the global communications team in New York to develop visuals, stories and other materials for local, regional and international audiences. The ideal candidate is one who understands the local media landscape and is comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.

This position reports to the Africa Program Director. The Coordinator will be expected to work creatively and communicate with the ITDP Africa team, ITDP headquarters, business leaders, journalists, publicists, public officials and civil society leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a communications strategy to raise ITDP Africa’s profile with the public and partners. 
  • Create multimedia content about ITDP Africa programs and disseminate the content through blog posts, e-bulletins, newspaper op-eds, social media and updates to africa.itdp.org. 
  • Maintain the organisation’s presence on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. 
  • Respond to media inquiries in the region, serving as a spokesperson for ITDP Africa when needed. Manage relationships with journalists and monitor media coverage of transport and urban development in the region. 
  • Liaise with ITDP global communications with regular updates on ITDP Africa’s most prominent projects. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4-5 years of experience in creating content related to urban mobility and related fields. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, creative writing, marketing or related field. 
  • Experience working with journalists and media. 
  • Experience developing and implementing online communications campaigns. 
  • Ability to create attractive multimedia content including videos and infographics.

Accounting Manager

Full Time Position New York City, USA

ITDP is seeking an Accounting Manager to join its headquarters team based in New York City.
Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, the Accounting Manager will oversee
accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and provide accounting systems support. The
Accounting Manager will supervise the Accounting Coordinator and the Grants and Finance
Coordinator and will work closely with the HQ based operations team and with colleagues in
ITDP’s global offices. The ideal candidate will be an outstanding accounting professional who is
a detail oriented, team player who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment

RESPONSIBILITIES

Grants, Contracts and Accounts Receivable Oversight

  • Create journal entries for projects or contract closures.
  • Review grants and contracts for revenue recognition and administration requirements.
  • Oversee accounts receivable; manage the work of the grants and finance coordinator.
  • Generate and review financials, KPI’s and analysis.
  • Manage cash flow on a monthly basis.

Accounts Payable Oversight

  • Review all of U.S. accounts payable and approve payments from headquarters on a
    weekly basis; manage the work of the accounting coordinator.
  • Manage accounts payable projections to align with cash flow.
  • Review 1099’s on an annual basis and work with accountant to ensure accurate and
    timely distribution.

Accounting Systems

  • Serve as the point person for integration of budgets within Intacct.
  • Serve as the point person for Nexonia and accounting related software.
    Payroll
  • Review monthly timesheets; coordinate with accounting teams in six global field offices
    to ensure accuracy and timely completion.
  • Review biweekly timesheets for accuracy and timely completion and process bi-weekly
    payroll for US staff.
  • Resolve payroll, state tax filing and other issues with ADP.
  • Conduct quarterly payroll reconciliation.
  • Review quarterly payroll reports and ensure federal and state compliance.
  • Review and distribute W2’s on an annual basis.

Other Accounting Functions

  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations of Headquarters.
  • Assist with annual audit.
  • Assist with reviewing internal procedures, manuals and guidelines as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors’ degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in accounting and payroll.
  • Solid knowledge of basic accounting principles in general and of grant-based accounting
    in particular.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office and Intacct.
  • Strong manager capable of mentoring staff.
  • Experience with ADP Workforce Now or other integrated payroll provider.
  • Proven ability to manage short and long term deadlines and conflicting priorities.

Events Consultant

Part Time Position Pune, India

This position works with the MOBILIZE Conference under the Global Program. Mobilize is the annual sustainable transport summit of ITDP, which brings together urban transport and development practitioners alongside world-class researchers to celebrate best practices and accelerate implementation of sustainable transport projects.  The select city hosts MOBILIZE Spring 2020. MOBILIZE spotlights the achievements of the winning city and gives transport professionals and researchers from around the world an opportunity to experience the city as a learning lab with lessons on how to get world class projects implemented. 

 

The Events Consultant will report to the MOBILIZE Lead. S/he will be part of the MOBILIZE team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in tandem with the Mobilize Lead to coordinate logistics for MOBILIZE 2020, including site visits, social events, travel and hotel accommodation plus conference activity including side meetings, often remotely with team in New York City
  • Assist in relationship building and communication between ITDP India, Local Government, NGO and Private Sector partnerships in Pune
  • Procurement and coordination of Venues, Accommodation, Visas, Caterers, Transportation, Exhibition Installation, Merchandize Vendors etc. 
  • Seek out volunteers or temporary staffing during MOBILIZE dates as on the ground support
  • Communicate and Coordinate between Mobilize Lead and Vendors; request quotes, samples, final product, payment forms and receipts, etc. 
  • Coordinate and participate in meetings with the Mobilize Host Committee, Officials, Sponsors or VIPs via phone or in-person
  • Assist in coordinating logistics for ITDP and related Partner events
