Streets are often overlooked as public spaces in a city. However, they have many uses, even more so during the pandemic. They allow people to move around, access essential services, and provide space for recreation. In India, around one-third of the population walks and cycle to work. Another third of all trips are by public transport, which requires walking and cycling for last-mile connectivity. The global lockdown has only increased the number of pedestrians and cyclists in our cities. Thus as cities reopen and physical distancing becomes a norm, we need safe streets for everyone.
ITDP India Programme has put together short-term recommendations that help cities to create safer streets for people. These will guide cities to ensure the safety of all commuters, provide an affordable alternative to public transport, ensure safe access to essentials, and aid in the mental and physical health of its people.
